What causes someone to be abusive, and can they change or is it a mental wiring thing?

I dated this guy who was emotionally abusive (emotional, pushed me, blocked me from leaving, swore at me when I left him, made me feel guilty for going out) I just was wondering what causes this and if it can change on it's own (like if he mat ures)
